Celebrity Resilience in Tough Tests

The grueling challenges of Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test reached new heights in its third season, pushing celebrities to their absolute limits. Among the chaos, unexpected humor emerged—like NFL star Cam Newton’s bold choice of vibrant boxer shorts during a high-pressure interrogation. Jovon “Q” Quarles, a former Navy SEAL instructor, couldn’t help but applaud the authenticity. “Cam’s personality shines through even under stress,” he remarked. “That moment captured him perfectly—unapologetically himself.”

Physical endurance tests took a comedic turn when Golden Tate, at 5’10”, struggled to carry the 6’7” Newton during a task. Quarles laughed, recalling how Newton’s size turned the exercise into a spectacle. “His feet dragged the ground—it was pure chaos,” he said. Such moments, though absurd, mirrored Quarles’ own SEAL training experiences, where instructors often found dark humor in recruits’ struggles.

Season 3’s finale tested mental fortitude above all. Finalists Brody Jenner and Kayla Nicole faced exhaustion, hunger, and psychological breakdowns. Nicole’s journey stood out—her emotional turbulence nearly derailed her, but she pushed through delirium to finish. “She was mentally shattered, yet somehow still standing,” Quarles noted.

Looking ahead, the show’s fourth season may swap deserts and mountains for untamed jungles. Quarles hinted at plans to amplify unpredictability: “We’re aiming for greener, wilder terrain—more chaos, fewer comforts.”

Behind the scenes, Quarles revealed untelevised moments, like a raw conversation with Nicole about perseverance. He also admitted that injuries, not weakness, eliminated some recruits. “True failure here isn’t about capability—it’s about survival,” he explained.

When asked about predicting success, Quarles was blunt: “You spot the fakes quickly. If they’re here for fame or a career boost? They crumble. This isn’t Hollywood—it’s brutal reality.” The real test, he emphasized, isn’t physical prowess but the grit to endure when every instinct screams to quit.

During last season, Jojo Siwa carried Tom Sandoval on her back, and this time, Golden Tate carried Cam Newton. Both moments were hilarious to witness. Cam Newton's size, being 6'7" and around 250 pounds, made it comical when placed on someone's back. In the Navy SEAL selection, instructors often find amusement in observing trainees in such predicaments. Jojo Siwa demonstrated a strong will and determination, making her a standout figure. Golden Tate showed great effort in carrying Cam Newton, putting in considerable work.

As for Cam Newton's colorful boxers during the interrogation scene, it perfectly encapsulates his personality. Being a football fan, the trainer had an idea of Cam Newton's character and found the moment fitting. Billy, with his British accent, humorously questioned the underpants, finding the situation amusing. Cam Newton's unique personality and individuality were on full display, not caring about others' opinions. His distinct style and approach to life were evident, making him who he is.

I really enjoy the mirror room scenes as they allow us to delve deeper into the recruits. Were there any recruits this season whose stories truly touched you?

Jordyn [Wieber]. When that whole situation with her occurred, you know, the assault and all related matters, I only had a faint awareness of it back then. However, actually listening to her recount what it was like was a difficult moment to be present for. It's like, she was in the highly competitive arena yet still had to endure and handle that situation. Witnessing her overcome all of it was a very powerful story for me.

You were there for Kayla Nicole's mirror room scene. Whose idea was it to have the article about Travis and Taylor prepared?

I'll let everyone who's watching or will watch this know that one characteristic of us is that we don't aim for tabloid - style interviews. When we conduct these interviews, we want to explore the depths of people. We knew that was a crucial matter for her. The relationship with Travis Kelce, how it ended, and how he's now with the world's biggest star, Taylor Swift, along with the negativity she was facing were real issues she was grappling with. People can be mean and cruel for no cause. I think it was Foxy's idea to bring it up.

I'll say this regarding her - they didn't include it in the show, but people might be curious about the behind - the - scenes happenings. We only have two hours to fit everything in. They did an excellent job of editing. After the red man exercise, when Kayla was done with it and we were trying to calm the celebrities down. Remember, that exercise is designed to raise your intensity to the highest level because in our line of work, you have to enter someone's home to catch the bad guys, the terrorists, to pursue someone who needs to be apprehended. You need to enter with great force and aggression, but also be in control of that aggression and switch it off. For example, if I enter one door and there's a guy with a weapon, then continue into the house and find a woman with a child at the next door, you have to be able to adjust your state instantaneously. So that was the purpose of the exercise - to teach them how to manage anger, aggression, anxiety, and fear, as there is fear involved too.

When we were speaking to her after she completed the red man exercise, I'm not sure what Foxy said to get her into that mental state, but she attacked the red man vigorously. After finishing, she had a moment. I was the one receiving their thoughts and feelings after that. So I was in front of them, absorbing everything and listening to her story. She overcame some trauma and was sharing it. She was revealing some of the things she faced when she was younger. And it's all genuine. I want people to see these things as real. The feelings, emotions, the highs and lows that these celebrities are experiencing are truly their own and are being expressed because we're providing them with a platform and also applying some pressure.

There was a time when I actually wanted to leave because just listening to her made me think, "Wow. She has been through a lot." However, that scene brought her back to that situation, but also helped her realize that she could overcome it. That's part of what the show is about. It helped her surmount that strain, that problem, that long - standing trauma. And she saw that when she tackled the red man exercise. We made her understand, "Hey, you survived that, right? You put it behind you. You won. You overcame it. Let's move forward. Proceed to the next day."

Future Seasons of American Grit

I understand that you have a lot of suggestions about who should be included in future seasons of American Grit, including civilians and athletes who left due to injuries. It's interesting that you mention a redemption season, where those who left for various reasons can come back and try to complete the training. A civilian season could also be a great way to bring in fresh faces and new perspectives to the show. As for the fourth season, you suggest that it could be set in a jungle and include more chaos and challenge. It's always exciting to see where the show will go next and what new challenges will be presented to the contestants.

Fan Support and Show Commitment

I'm thrilled to see the support and enthusiasm from all the fans who have been following the show. We pour our hearts and energy into this, aiming to provide an authentic representation of elite forces like Navy SEALs, Marine Recon, SAS, and SBS. Our goal is to offer a genuine glimpse into what it's like to be in their shoes, experiencing the same fatigue, hunger, cold, and wet conditions.

At 44, I may not be as young as I used to be, but I still feel every bit of the physical and mental challenges. It’s a privilege to be part of this show, and we are grateful for the support from the fans, Fox, and Minnow Films. We hope to continue this journey for many more seasons, ideally 10 or more, and keep bringing this unique experience to the world.
