Nicholas Barasch's Riverdale Journey

Nicholas Barasch has landed a significant role in "Riverdale" season 7. He's not portraying the possessed sailor doll version of Julian but rather the human Julian, the origin story of the character the doll is based on.

In this final season of the CW's wild show, he's one of the Blossom twins, alongside Madelaine Petsch as Cheryl Blossom. This isn't Jason Blossom; it's a new character in the 1955 time - jump setting.

Barasch shared with Decider how he and Petsch interacted when they first met. She provided some insights into Julian, who might have been "consumed" in the womb when Jason was alive, and now things are different. He had to learn on the job.

Although Barasch has TV experience, including voicing Austin in "The Backyardigans," the role of Julian Blossom was a new exploration for the stage veteran. It was through his work in "The Butcher Boy" that showrunner Roberto Aguirre - Sacasa discovered him and got the idea for Julian in the final season.

Aguirre - Sacasa said he saw Barasch in an off - Broadway musical at the Irish Repertory Theater, thought he'd be great for Julian Blossom in the 1950s reality of the show, and thus the character was added.

In the seventh - season premiere, we saw Julian integrated with the "Riverdale" gang, competing with Archie Andrews for Veronica Lodge's affections, starting as a bit of a bully but with more beneath the surface.

When asked about Aguirre - Sacasa getting the idea for Julian after seeing him off - Broadway, Barasch was surprised. He didn't know until later. He auditioned for the role like a normal process, sent in a tape, had a callback, and soon booked the role and flew to Vancouver.

Barasch was aware of "Riverdale" as it's a cultural phenomenon. He even auditioned for Archie in 2016 in New York.

He jokes about being mean to KJ Apa in their scenes this season as Apa is so nice.

Coming on to the set for the final season of a seven - season show was a scary experience for Barasch. His first day was terrifying as he had no lines but had to seem like he belonged. But the kind cast and crew, especially the Canadians, made him feel welcome quickly.

Stepping into the chaotic world of Riverdale mid-series wasn’t a walk in the park for Nicholas Barasch.
The actor admits the show’s surreal tone and established ensemble initially left him nervous,
but channeling Julian’s insecurities helped ease his own.

\n\nOn-screen chemistry came naturally, especially with Nathalie Boltt (his character’s mother).
Their dynamic blends humor and mischief, often leading to on-set laughter—even during pivotal emotional scenes.
“She’d crack jokes right before my close-ups,” he recalls. “Resisting giggles became a sport.”

\n\nA standout memory? Filming a sprawling dinner sequence with icons like Molly Ringwald.
The scene, packed with legacy cast members, felt like a “pinch-me moment” for the newcomer.
“It wasn’t just acting; it was celebrating the show’s history,” he says.

\n\nJulian’s rivalry with Archie over Veronica added layers to Barasch’s journey.
Though initially daunted by the show’s seven-season legacy,
he found camaraderie in co-stars Camila Mendes and KJ Apa.
“Their energy made those competitive scenes feel like playful challenges,” he shares.

\n\nThen came the infamous shirtless montage—a whirlwind of absurdity.
Between jungle makeouts and half-dressed chaos, Barasch learned a lesson in snack timing.
“I devoured a hot dog right before filming,” he laughs. “Karl [Walcott] side-eyed me like, ‘Really? Now? ’”

\n\nDespite the quirks, he credits the crew’s warmth for turning anxiety into exhilaration.
“Surreal? Absolutely. But when everyone’s committed to the madness, you just lean in.”

Julian's Journey on Riverdale

You've got a long association with Broadway, and "Riverdale" has had quite a few musical numbers. So, will we ever get to hear you sing on the show? Well, I'd say there's a good chance!

Maybe this is a bit spoilery, but Roberto did say you won't be in the 1950s for the whole time. Is Julian just part of the 1950s? Or might we see a modern - day Julian too? I'd really like to see a modern - day Julian. Honestly, I'm not sure what their plans are for the present or the past. At first, I thought that if it was a parallel universe situation, he wouldn't be part of the present - day world. But really, anything could happen, so we'll just have to wait and see.

Here's a very general question. You've done a fair bit of TV work and a great deal of stage work. Do you have a preference by now? I was just chatting with a friend about this the other day. It might sound a bit cliched, but I truly love both. This past week on set, I was thinking, "Wow! Being on set really is like a spiritual experience." Because no matter how much prep you do, how much work you put in... I'm a hard worker, coming from theater as you mentioned, so I'm used to a lot of practice, a lot of rehearsal, and doing things over and over again. But with TV, you do some prep, and then when you arrive, you need to be adaptable enough at that moment to listen to the director's advice, take in suggestions from props, and heed the script supervisor's notes and just be in the moment. So I think they both present different kinds of challenges. The more TV work I do, the more I seem to love it. But theater is still my home base for me. But yes, I love them both.

I know you can't give away too much, but what can we anticipate for Julian as the season progresses? Julian has had a tough time. That's about all I can probably say. But I think he enjoys causing trouble. He's rather confrontational. I'm not like that in real life (as Nicholas), so learning to play someone like that has been both enjoyable and a challenge in terms of being so assertive. I'm not sure if that fully answers your question, but there will definitely be more of that.
